The Lost Pig
In one of the Australian towns there lives a merchant who has hardly ever been known to give away a shilling in his life.
One morning a poor Irishman stepped in to the counting-house, and, looking the picture of misery, tyold him that he has lost his pig-the only pig he had. The mnerchant refused to help him, and upon this the Irishman threw himself on achair and began to cry bitterly. The merchant thought that his grief wa scaused by the death of his pig, and at last gave him a sovereign.
Next day the merchant met the Iriushman in the street,. And said to him:” Now, Paddy, if you buy a pig with that sovereign, you must take better care of him than you did of the other, What did he die of?” The Irishmnan replied:
“Well, your honour, he did not die of anything in particuloar. He was so fat that I killed him.”
