VERBS ENDING IN ‘-IFY’  以-ify结尾的动词

Verbs from Nouns and Back Again 名词转变成动词，然后再转变为名词

有许多动词是由名词加-ify变来的：

terror"terrify  恐怖，惊骇"害怕，使惊骇    horror"horrify 恐怖，震惊"使恐惧，使惊惧

identity"identify  身份"确认，识别    electricity"electrify 电"使充电

在这些动词后面加上-ication的话，又会变成别的名词：identify"identification确认，识别"验明，识别

electrify"eletrification 使充电"带电  modify"modification更改"修改

unify"unification  统一"统一，一致  还有与上例相似，但又稍有不同的例子，如：

satisfy"satisfaction  满足"满意，满足  例句：

the woman will have to identify the body. 这个妇女不得不去确认尸体。

The government plans to electrify all the main railway lines into the capital. 政府计划给通往首都的主干线铁路供电。

My mother fets a lot of satisfation from her garden. 我妈妈从料理花园中得到解决了很大的满足。

Adectivces from Verbs  动词转变成形容词

以-ify结尾的动词，把y变成I,再加-ed,就会变成过去分词：

terrify"terrified  恐惧"恐怖的   unify"unified统一"统一的  modify"modified  修改"修改过的

satisfy"satisfied  满足"满足的  这些过去分词大多可以用形容词：

The unified management structure is much  more tried to help the terrified children. 我们试图去帮助受惊吓的孩子们。

She is another satisfied customer. 她是另一个感到满意的顾客。

 

COMPOUND VERBAL NOUNS  复合动名词

我们已经学过动词加-ing变成名词的例子：

skate"skating 滑"滑冰    ride"riding 骑"骑  collect"collecting  收集"收集   climb"climbing爬"爬

这样的名词还可以用在其他名词的后面，组成一个新的名词：

ice skating 滑冰  horse riding 骑马   stamp collecting  集邮  rock climbing 攀岩运动

例句：Ice skating is my favorite winter sport. 滑冰是我喜欢的冬季体育运动。

我们在第一单元里学了短语动词，也就是动词+介词或副词。最常用的是下面三个：up   out   over
