In your e-mail; of June 7 you asked about American business customs. I am happy to answer your questions and give you some advice to help you prepare for your first trip to the United States.

•American men and women hsake hands when they are introduced on business occasions.

•U.S. busness meetings usually begin exactly on time. A 10:00 Am appointment means you should arrive exactlyat, or a few minutes before 10:00 AM.

• Business meetings over lunch are common. They usually start at about 12:30 and end by 2:00.

•Don’t be surprised if you get an invitation to breakfast. It is a popular time for business get- togethers.

A: Ken, you’ve spent some time in the Us. Havent you? 肯，你曾经在美国待过一段时间，是吗？

 

K:Yes, I was in the States for a year. 是的，我在美国待过一年。

A：Well, I’m going to New York on business next month, and I was hopeing you could give me some advice.

A：What about business clothe?　商务场合的着装怎么样？

K: Well, a lot of American companies have a business casual dress code.许多美国公司都有商务休闲装的着装规则。

Ａ：What do you mean, business casual?你说“商务休闲装”是什么意思？

K: For men, it usually means you should wear a shirt shoes, but no jeans, sandals, trainers or while socks.对于男人来讲，商务休闲装的意思就是你应该穿带领带的衬衫、系皮带的裤子裤子和皮鞋，但是不能穿牛仔裤、凉鞋、运动鞋或白袜子。

A: What about a suit?穿套装怎么样？

K: Well, some American executives wear a suilt to work, so take one with you,just in case. And whatever you do, be sure to take lightweight colthes. It can be very hot and humid on New York at this time of the year.
