Bottom of the ocean
Eddie looked into the nursery and what he saw was both familiar and unfamiliar. There was something strange from this perspective, on the outside of the window, like looking into a pond on a calm day.
The teddy bear night-light illuminated the room . he could see his daughter through the bars of her crib. She was slumped over a pillow asleep, like an otter on a rock. Her body rose and fell with her breath.
From the bushes, a frog asked, “re-gret? Re-gret? Re-gret?”
Eddie saw himself on the other side of the pane. He would drown in that room, swallowing in silence until he sank to the bottom of the ocean.
Eddie kissed his index finger and pressed it against the window, half expecting ripples to cover the pane, then returned to his car parked three blocks away.
