to do someone’s heart good 使某人高兴
中文里常说“对……有益处”,英文中也有相似的的说法:do…good(=do good to…)。而英文的do someone’s heart good(对某人的心有益处),则是“使某人高兴的意思。
★ It does Amy’s heart good to see her grandchildren so healthy and happy.
看到孙儿信如此健康快乐,艾美感到很高兴。
★ It did my heart good to hear how successful you’ve become.
听到你这么成功,我很高兴。
Not have the heart (to do something)
(因为心地善良而)不忍心做(某事)
前面提过,the heart代表“心地‘,尤其是”善良的民地“。因为心地善良,而不忍心去做某事,英文里就称之为not have the heart (to do something).
★ The boy was so downcast at having broken the window that his teacher didn’t have the heart to punish him.
这男孩子因为打破窗户而非常自责,以致于老师不忍心惩罚他。
★ How could you have ever had the heart to do such a cruel things?
这么残忍的事你怎么忍心去做呢?
To lose heart 泄气
人生不如意事十之八九,一般人遇到不如意的事,难免感到泄气。中文里的“泄气”,英文则会用lose heart来表达。
★ I know it’s difficult to fie a job now, but don’t lose heart.
你知道现在很难找到工作,但别泄气啊!
★ After 24 hours had passed and there was still no news of the missing plane, we began to lose heart.
飞机在失踪二十四小时后仍无任何消息,我们开始感到泄气。
To take heart感受鼓励
Take heart 与lose heart(泄气)的意义相反,表示“感受鼓励,产生勇气”的意思。
★ Small businesses should take heart at the government’s tax relief plan.
小企业议论地因政府的减税方案而受到激励。
★ I had been worried about failing English, but I took heart at my teacher’s words of encouragement.
我原先担心英文会不及格,但听了老师鼓励的话之后就产生了勇气。
to lose ones’ heart to somebody/something爱上某人/某物
lose ones’ heart to somebody/something字面上是“把你自己的心输给某人或某物”,意思就是“爱上某人”或“喜爱某物”,与泄气无关。
★ Lucy has lost her heart to a billionaire much older than her.
露西爱上一个年纪比她大很多的亿万富翁。
★ Todd lost his heart to photography since he was a student.
托德在学生时代就爱上了摄影。
