美国的餐馆可分为三种：
1.自助餐馆，自助餐馆的食物琳琅满目，冷热皆备。顾客可到柜台前随意拿取，且食品价格较便宜，不必付小费。
2.正式餐馆，其规格大小不一。小餐馆价格低廉，服务质量较低；大餐馆富丽堂皇，顾客所需应有尽有。大多数正式餐馆都有点菜、全餐和特餐之分。点菜的分类食品有鱼类、肉类、色拉、蛋类等，顾客可任意点叫。全餐分为开胃食品、主菜、蔬菜、甜品心和饮料，也任客选用。特餐是指每天的份饭，包括用肉或鱼做的一道菜，另交蔬菜、色拉、面包和奶油。其中点菜最贵，特餐最廉。在正式餐馆中就餐要给小费，数额约为餐费的15%。
3.快餐店、小吃店、熟食店和午餐室。大城市里到处都有大众化的快餐店，售卖法式炸土豆、意大利馅饼、汉堡包、炸鱼三明治、烤牛肉三明治等。熟食店出售既快捷又实惠的午餐，通常备有多种三明治和色拉，在店里吃要给小费。午餐室一般设在车站或商店里，出售早餐、简便的午餐和快餐。午餐室食品种类多，服务速度快，十分经济，它是赶路者经常关顾的地方。就餐后应在柜台上留下小费。
