美国是铁路的故乡，而美国，拥有世界第一的铁路运营里程，有近30万公里。芝加哥是美国最大的铁路枢纽，是美国中北部30多条铁路线的集结点，城市铁路线总长1.24万公里和年货运量5.12亿吨均居世界各大城市之首。
在美国，火车票也实行实名制，一般旅游者可以出示护照。也可以用信用卡在机器上买票。信用卡购票可以直接获取买票人的信息。
美国很多火车站并没有很宽敞的候车大厅，只是在整个大堂里隔出一片跟咖啡馆大小一样的地方，让持票候车的所有乘客坐在一起，等待各自车次的广播通知，然后跟着车站人员到特定电梯口下月台。看来在美国坐火车跟在中国一样只能坐指定车次。在欧洲，火车站大堂设有巨型显示屏通报什么车往什么终点，在哪个月台几点开车。人们只要看准了就直接走到该月台上车就是。如在英国和法国坐火车，似乎更方便，买了票，只要是哪个方向的车，都可以上，也不限指定车次，几天内乘坐都有效。
